Taiwan’s 32 athletes, led by Team Leader Yang Ming-en and Coach Cheng Shih-fei, arrived at Welland, Ontario on July 28th to compete in the 2018 ICF (International Canoe Federation) Canoe Polo World Championships. The athletes were selected and trained by the Chinese Taipei Canoe Association. Michael Kuan-chung Chen, Deputy Director-General of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Toronto (Toronto TECO) and the Office’s Senior Assistant Director Vera Wang went to Welland on July 30 to attend the Competition’s opening ceremony and cheer for Team Taiwan.
Deputy Director-General Chen was the only foreign officer attending the ceremony. He was invited to sit with M.P. Vance Badawey, Welland Mayor Frank Campion and the CEO of Canoe Kayak Canada Casey Wade. Deputy Director-General Chen had a great interaction with these guests.
In a welcome remark, Mayor Campion pointed out that this was the second time Canada hosted the Championships and he, on behalf of Welland and its residents, sincerely welcomed all the 67 teams from 26 countries to participate in the 2018 ICF Canoe Polo World Championships.
After the ceremony, Deputy Director-General Chen visited Team Taiwan and presented some local products as mementos, wishing the team members the best for their performance in the Competition.
