A seven-member delegation of permanent representatives of diplomatic allies to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations is visiting Taiwan from August 14 to 19 at the invitation of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan). The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) warmly welcomes the delegation.
Members of the delegation include Ambassador Vuyile Dumisani Dlamini of Eswatini and his wife, Ambassador Doreen deBrum of the Marshall Islands and her husband, Ambassador Ángela María Chávez Bietti of Guatemala and her husband, and Ambassador Chitra Talatoka Jeremiah of Nauru.
The delegation will call on President Tsai Ing-wen, President of the Control Yuan and Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission Chen Chu, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu, Minister of Health and Welfare Hsueh Jui-yuan, and Minister of Digital Affairs Audrey Tang. They will also attend banquets hosted by MOFA and the Ministry of Health and Welfare. In addition, their itinerary includes cultural excursions and visits to the National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction and the International Cooperation and Development Fund. The members of the delegation will exchange views with Taiwan government officials on a wide range of issues covering human rights, medical and health cooperation, scientific and technological research and development, disaster prevention and control, sustainable development, and efforts by Taiwan to promote its participation in the UN system and expand its international space. The delegation’s visit will give the members a deeper understanding and firsthand experience of Taiwan’s culture and customs.
Geneva is home to a UN office and the headquarters of UN specialized agencies, such as the World Health Organization, the International Labour Organization, and the International Telecommunication Union, as well as the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The visiting dignitaries boast a wealth of experience, as well as extensive expertise in UN affairs. They are firm friends of Taiwan, having proactively assisted Taiwan over the years in seeking participation in the UN system, including WHO. Ambassador Jeremiah previously served as Nauru’s ambassador to Taiwan.
In addition to providing these permanent representatives of diplomatic allies an opportunity to better understand Taiwan, the visit will enable related Taiwan government agencies to gain insights into the operations of the UN system and UN discussions on various issues. This will help ensure that Taiwan’s policy formulation and bids for international participation meet global trends and developments, thereby enhancing Taiwan’s positive image as a responsible member of the global village and a force for good.
