To promote Chinese characters and Taiwanese culture overseas, the “Taipei Representative Office in Ireland” and “Dublin School of Mandarin Chinese” jointly organized the “Second Annual Chinese Character Festival” held in Greystones. There were more than 200 people in attendance, varying from principals, teachers, students, parents, and political, economic, cultural, educational and media circles in Dublin. The event was remarkably most successful.
Representative Simon S.K. Tu expressed gratitude to the Overseas Chinese Affairs Council’s strong support of the “Chinese Character Festival” and to the Dublin School of Mandarin Chinese for hosting such a meaningful event. The Principal, Evan Furlong, carefully planned enriched activities to promote Mandarin Language, which included lively teachings, a dance by the Electric Techno Neon Gods and other cultural performances, which were all very popular for the participating school children. In fact, this year’s event included more activities than ever before, and attendees could enjoy traditional calligraphy workshops, Chinese character puzzles, digital Chinese character games, a Taiwanese culinary cooking demonstration, Chinese character documentary, traditional costume fashion show and traditional musical instruments display. Special guest also included Miss Taiwan, “Greystones Guide” and of course, the Electric Techno Neon God.
Representative Tu also take the opportunity to emphasize how the bilateral relations in economy, trade, culture, education, NGOs, science, technology and media between Ireland and Taiwan have continued to strengthen. Learning the respective languages of Ireland and Taiwan is a particularly good way for both sides to understand each other. The Representative Office therefore continues to work with Dublin School of Mandarin Chinese to promote overseas Taiwanese teaching and culture. As a language spoken by 1.4 billion people worldwide, learning Mandarin Chinese has a huge amount of cultural advantages that can benefit adolescents who take it for their high school diplomas. Having the ability to speak Chinese can encourage students to travel, study and experience the unique culture in new and exciting locations around Taiwan in the future.
Finally, Representative Tu, Principal Furlong and other VIPs jointly presented the winning certificates and prizes for outstanding students. Hopefully all the parents and schoolchildren who participated this year enjoyed their time at the event and will encourage others to attend this exciting event next year.
