At the East Asia Film Festival Ireland 2026, the selected Taiwanese film was Girl, written and directed by actress Shu Qi, which won Best Director at the 2025 Busan International Film Festival. The film was screened on March 21 at the Irish Film Institute, with Ambassador Daniel Diann-Wen Tang and his spouse in attendance. The screening was attended by over 150 audiences.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Tang noted that the festival offers a great platform to share Taiwan’s everyday life, culture, and perspectives with Irish audiences through film. He also introduced Girl as Shu Qi’s directorial debut, portraying the tensions and struggles faced by families, individuals, and women in Taiwan’s process of industrialization.
Festival director Maria O'Brien expressed appreciation for the continued support from the Taipei Representative Office in Ireland, which has helped bring works by leading Taiwanese filmmakers—including Hou, Hsiao-Hsien—to wider international audiences.
A post-screening reception was also held in collaboration with the festival, offering audiences a chance to engage and learn more about each other’s film and culture.
