Welcome to Taiwan, we are in Taipei now. A short ID - about 23 million residents, something like three times the size of Israel - it is a presidential democracy. The president lives here in the presidential palace in Taipei, the capital. Taiwan is the world's 22nd largest economy.

Jiang Kai Shek, the nationalist leader, fled to Taiwan with about 2 million supporters. For 70 years they are enemies and China is trying to take over Taiwan. Therefore only 20 countries in the world recognize Taiwan as the Republic of China. The Chinese condition is very simple - anyone who does business with Taiwan, who recognize Taiwan, is banned by the Chinese superpower.

In the first 20 years the whole world supported Taiwan, including the young State of Israel in 1950, the world saw Taiwan as country standing against the Communists in China, and then the Americans transfer their recognition in 1970 to China, and this was over.

Taiwan has become a capitalist country with a thriving free market, the 22nd largest economy in the world. This is the main explanation of why the confrontation between Taiwan and China remained a political, diplomatic and cultural conflict and did not become war.

One of the reasons is of course high-tech. Just like us, Taiwanese see themselves as the start-up nation, a host to Taiwanese thriving technology and communications companies like ASUS. When we visited

Taipei last week, we met many start-ups led by young Taiwanese who want to break through international isolation.

Israel is the guest of honor at the International Book Fair. Even the President of Taiwan, Tsai Yang wen, arrived to open the book fair.

We tried to talk to her, but she didn’t stop.

The truth is that it is very fun to be an Israeli in Taiwan. The Taiwanese see in Israel a great success story that reminds themselves as a thriving, vibrant democracy against big and powerful enemies.

Taiwan is very interested in Israeli culture, in literature, even the inventor of the Taki game came to teach the Taiwanese to play Taki.
