The President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Tsai Ing-wen was awarded Tagore Prize’s statuette and "One Hundred Poems of Kabir" by Mr. Peter Bundalo, Founder of the Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize 2019 at the India International Center in New Delhi, April 23, 2019.
President Tsai was represented by Amb. Tien Chung-kwang, head of Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India (TECC) to receive this award in recognition of Taiwan’s democratic developments and human rights advancement.
“The Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize is an annual event with the purpose to reconcile international and Indian writers and artists, to bridge cultural differences and to promote peace and education, according to TagorePrize, the hosting organization.
With Rana Dasgupta and his literary novel “Solo” winning the prize in literature, Taiwan (ROC) is invited as the guest country this year owning to it being a beacon of democracy and human rights, which is one of the greatest achievements of human civilizations, TagorePrize founder Peter Bundalo said.
Expressing sincere appreciation on behalf of President Tsai, Amb. Tien Chung-kwang said “President Tsai is the first female President in the Chinese-speaking society and has always been an active promoter for peace, democracy and human rights since assuming office in May, 2016,” Amb. Tien said.
“As India is the largest democracy in the world and Taiwan the beacon of democracy in Asia, we have so many in common and should work together to preserve our shared values,” Amb. Tien said, adding the prize statuette will be shortly delivered to the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
The Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize was sponsored by the Maitreya Publishing Foundation from the United States.
