Director-General of TECC in Chennai, Mr. Charles Li was invited by Professor Ramu Manivannan, Head of the Department of Politics and Public Administration at University of Madras, to deliver a special speech on “The significance of Taiwan mayoral elections 2018”, at the Department on December 12th,2018.
He illustrated the political dynamics of Taiwan and its trend over the last two elections in 2014 and 2016 in comparison with the nine-in-one elections in November 2018. He shared his observations and analyses on the impact of the elections and factors which might cause the results in favour of KMT candidates in the City and County Mayoral elections. One such was the charismatic KMT candidate in Kaohsiung City, Mr. Han Kuo-yu, who made the “Han Wave” during the campaign. Another important factor is the swing voters, the younger generations with the help of social media to help shape their perspectives and decisions.
The lecture was well received by the students and teaching staff and they raised a few questions on the Cross-Strait relations, the effectiveness and control of social media, the causal effect of central government’s policies to local elections, even to compare with the most recent Indian elections in five states. As the department incorporates three major streams, Public Administration, Political Science and International Relations, the students acquire in-depth knowledge about the impact of government policies implementation over its people, analysis of the political trend over the elections, and how the domestic politics of a country can influence its international relationship. The audience agreed that the speech has paved a path for the research in this field and this election can be an interesting subject for case study.
