On the morning of June 9, 2026, Director-General Stephen Hsu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC) in Chennai attended and witnessed the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on industry-academia collaboration among Chennai Institute of Technology (CIT), National Formosa University (NFU) of Taiwan, and Air Gas Electronic Materials Enterprise (AGEM). The event marked a significant milestone in Taiwan–India cooperation in higher education, industrial innovation, and scientific research.
In his remarks, Director-General Stephen Hsu emphasized that technological progress is built upon sustained investment in education, research, and talent development. To highlight the transformative power of innovation, he contrasted the technology that enabled the Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969 with the sophisticated technology found in today’s smart devices. He further highlighted Taiwan’s strategic investments in education, research and development, and industrial growth since the 1970s, which have contributed to the emergence of world-leading technology companies such as TSMC. These achievements demonstrate Taiwan’s critical role in the global supply chain and showcase its strengths in technological talent and innovation-driven ecosystems.
Director-General Stephen Hsu underscored the historic significance of the MOU, noting that it represents the first semiconductor-focused industry-academia partnership between Taiwan and South India. He also encouraged the approximately 300 students in attendance to pursue their studies with dedication and aspire to become future “Ambassadors of Innovation.”
He further noted that Taiwan possesses global strengths in semiconductors, smart manufacturing, automation, and industrial innovation, while India is home to a vast pool of engineering talent, strong research capabilities, and a robust information technology sector. These complementary advantages have already produced successful collaborations in areas such as electronics manufacturing, exemplified by Foxconn’s production of iPhones in India for global markets.
The partnership among CIT, NFU, and AGEM is expected to further strengthen collaboration across industry, academia, and research. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in Chennai remains committed to nurturing future generations of research and innovation talent, deepening educational exchanges, scientific cooperation, and industrial partnerships between Taiwan and India, and creating new opportunities for shared growth and prosperity.
