(ZIZ News) – On Wednesday, the Republic of China (Taiwan) presented monetary scholarships to 170 students in St. Kitts and Nevis.
At the presentation ceremony held at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, Minster of Education Hon. Shawn Richards congratulated the recipients and urged them to live up to the expectations bestowed upon them.
“Receive these scholarships with pride and gratitude and remember that they come with high expectations,” the Minister said adding “It demands from all of you, strong commitment and a sense of responsibility. You are expected to be role models for your peers. Work with success in mind. I am certain that you will live up to the high standards expected of you and do exceedingly well in your areas of study.”
After 15 years of uninterrupted co-operation in human resource development, St. Kitts and Nevis and the Republic of China, Taiwan formalised the sponsorship agreement and signed a five year memorandum in 2014.
Resident Taiwan Ambassador, His Excellency George Gow Wei Chiou stressed the importance of partnership to human resource development.
“Human resources are the foundation for a country’s national development and education is a crucial mechanism for exploiting human resources. Over the years, the Government of the Republic of China, Taiwan has cooperated with the Government of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis in the sponsorship of human resources development on an annual basis,” Ambassador Chiou said, noting that the purpose of the programme is to enrich students’ knowledge and enhance teachers’ professional skills.
The scholarships were presented to top students entering first form, students from the Cotton Thomas Comprehensive School and AVEC as well as first year students pursuing studies at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant and Nevis Sixth Form College.
