Dr. The Rt. Excellent and Rt. Hon. Sir Kennedy Simmonds, the first Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis and the only living National Hero, expressed his deep concern for China‘s provocative military actions, and his empathy with the Government and people of Taiwan, in a letter addressed to Ambassador Lin.
He wrote “as the person who established diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1983, I can reiterate my continuing commitment to the longstanding friendship between our two peoples”, and he “continues to support your (Taiwan’s) basic right to live and grow in peace and safety, with full acceptance in the international community”.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Aviation of the Federation also released a statement in support of Taiwan, emphasizing that “unwarranted and unprovoked action by The People’s Republic of China… within Taiwan airspace and waters… risk unnecessary greater escalation and can lead to unintended consequences and unnecessary military conflict”. The Ministry stated that “St. Kitts and Nevis upholds the principles of democracy, rule of law and territorial integrity and sovereignty. St. Kitts and Nevis stand in solidarity with the Government and people of the Republic of China (Taiwan)“.
Premier Mark Brantley tweeted that the escalation of tensions by China undermines peace and security in the region, and “we reject war and threats of war everywhere“.
The Embassy would like to express our gratitude for Sir Kennedy Simmonds, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Aviation, and Premier Brantley, for the unwavering support for Taiwan during this very challenging time.
