To raise public awareness of youth mental health and encourage open communication within families, the Taiwan Technical Mission in St. Kitts and Nevis, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of St. Kitts and Nevis and local NGO LAKE Health and Wellbeing, jointly hosted the premiere of the video “Building a Safe Space at Home” and a Youth Mental Health Forum on March 12.
The event brought together more than 120 participants, including government officials, educators, mental health professionals, and youth representatives, to discuss how families can become safe psychological spaces for children.
Prime Minister and Minister of Health Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Hon. Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, and Ambassador Edward Ling-wen Tao attended the event and delivered remarks highlighting the importance of mental health for social development and the well-being of young people.
Prime Minister Drew noted that many forms of social violence are closely linked to mental health challenges. Strengthening mental health awareness and support systems, he said, is therefore essential for maintaining social safety and stability. Deputy Prime Minister Hanley emphasized that the family is the first safe space in a child’s life, and strong family support helps children build confidence at school and develop healthy interpersonal relationships.
Ambassador Tao remarked that mental health is not solely the responsibility of the healthcare system. Families, schools, and communities must work together to establish supportive networks. Through cross-sector collaboration and intergenerational dialogue, societies can create environments that foster the healthy development of children and adolescents.
During the forum, several young participants candidly shared their experiences, noting that in some family environments children find it difficult to express differing opinions. Even when they wish to seek counseling, concerns about stigma or being judged may discourage them from doing so. Mental health professionals at the event emphasized that “non-judgmental listening” is a crucial step in understanding and responding to children’s emotional needs.
The event is organized by the Taiwan Technical Mission as part of the “Mental Health Services Strengthening Project,” launched in July 2024 and led by Project Manager Ms. Ivy Shih. The project aims to enhance mental health care in St. Kitts and Nevis by strengthening the capacity of mental health professionals and raising public awareness of mental health issues.
