St. Jude Hospital hosted a reception on September 27, 2017 to welcome Taiwan Changhua Christian Hospital Medical Volunteer Team to Saint Lucia. Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Saint Lucia, H.E. Douglas C.T. Shen, and Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Health and Wellness, Mr. Felix St. Hill were among the dignitaries who attended the welcome reception.
In his remarks, Ambassador Shen expressed his appreciation to the volunteers for travelling all the way from Taiwan to render medical service to the local people. He stated since the twinning agreement was signed between Changhua Christian Hospital and St. Jude Hospital, there has been a steady flow of personnel exchange, and over the years more than 120 medical experts from Taiwan performed volunteer work at St. Jude Hospital, offering services to over 6,000 patients in the south. Ambassador Shen also reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to assist Saint Lucia in the area of medical care.
Permanent Secretary St. Hill thanked Taiwan and Changhua Christian Hospital for the long-standing support provided to St. Jude Hospital and sponsoring scholarship for Saint Lucian medical students to study in Taiwan. He stated that the Ministry of Health will arrange the first batch of medical students graduated in Taiwan to perform their internship at St. Jude Hospital.
Ms. Verna Charles, Chief Executive Officer of St. Jude Hospital welcomed the volunteers to Saint Lucia. She also thanked Changhua Christian for providing training programs to eight hospital staff each year, all of whom benefited greatly from the knowledge and experience they learned in Taiwan. .
The six-member Taiwanese medical volunteer team will stay in St. Jude Hospital until October 13, providing services in otorhinolaryngology, obstetrics, gynecology, Chinese medicine and occupational therapy.
