TOCFL-Novice Listening and Reading Test, is a Mandarin language test designed for adult Mandarin starters who have learned the language in non-Mandarin speaking regions more than 60 hours. TOCFL-Novice contains two proficiency levels: Novice 1 and Novice 2, which are below CEFR A 1. The test is based on about 300 high-frequency words and uses abundant pictures to illustrate authentic situations, with the aim to evaluate the ability of recognition and comprehension of words/phrases. The goal of the test is to provide an outlook of Mandarin starters'abilities on listening and reading, as well as encourage them to set learning objectives in their future learning plans after taking the test.
