Three female artists from Taiwan, Ms. Wu, Yun-feng, Ms. Hsieh, Hsin-jung, and Ms. Zeng, Chi-ting, participated in the 6th RIGA INTERNATIONAL TEXTILE AND FIBRE ART TRIENNIAL: Tradition and Innovation, theme "Identity", and won prizes and praises. In total, 218 pieces of art works by numbers of artists were submitted for application to the 6th RIGA INTERNATIONAL TEXTILE AND FIBRE ART TRIENNIAL. Out of them, 85 pieces of art works by artists from 26 countries were selected and qualified for exhibition in the Triennial. Ms. Wu Yun-feng’s work “Salted Fish and My Suitcase”won the third place among the aforesaid 85 pieces of works. Meanwhile, the other two Taiwanese artists’ works were also selected to be exhibited.
In her remarks made in the Latvian National Museum of Art on Jun 6th, Minister of Culture Hon. Dace Melbarde expressed her appreciation to artists for their active participation in the Triennial, one of significant events for celebrating Latvia’s centennial. Minister Melbarde was greeted by Ms. Wu in front of her work and listened to the illustration by Representative R. C. Wu of Taipei Mission in Latvia in a cordial atmosphere.
As a Hakka originated from Guangdong of China, Ms. Wu Yun-feng was born in Hong Kong and studied and earned an art degree from Taiwan Tunghai university. She settled down in Taiwan after married with her classmate, also a hakka from Miao-li, Taiwan. To respond to the theme of the Triennial, Ms. Wu demonstrates changing of her identity in different period of her life, China, British Hong Kong, Chinese Hong Kong, and Taiwan. An important part of her works is a bed quilt decorated with 30 square weaving patterns, representing incidents of her life, such as passing of her grandfather, marriage, and birth of her children, indicating her embracing with family.
