on 16 April, Ambassador Lee was on a business trip invited and accompanied by Hon. Ingrida Circene, Chairperson of Saeima Taiwan friendship group, to Liepaja, the third largest city of Latvia. Amb. Lee called on Madame Rector Dace Markus of Liepaja University, joined by 10 faculty members and professors. The meeting mainly focused on the enhancement of exchange and cooperation programs between the University and its Taiwan counterparts.
During the meeting, Amb. Lee gave a briefing on Taiwan’s current state of higher education and its soaring popularity as a study destination for international students, increased by nearly 100% to be over 150,000 in the past decade. Amb. Lee emphasized the great importance that Taiwan has attached to the promotion of various Taiwanese government sponsored scholarship projects available to Latvian students and researchers, and he welcomed the Latvian scholars and younger generation choose Taiwan as a favorable destination for pursuing advanced study, learning Mandarin and Taiwan studies and Sinology.
Amb. Lee went on to pay a visit to Mayor Gunars Ansins of the City in the afternoon. Amb. Lee offered congratulation to Mayor Ansins for the City’s nomination as 2027 European Capital of Culture followed by a detailed introduction on the city on going development projects and the visions for the next few years. They also had a very candid and dynamic discussion on the city's investment and tourism opportunities for Taiwan and tangible measures to promote bilateral exchanges and cooperation.
