Starting on Nov. 19, 2018, Marshallese and Taiwanese people holding a valid passport with remaining validity of at least six months can travel to one another’s country on a 90-day visa-waiver program without applying for a visa in advance before traveling.
Following the signature of an agreement on the mutual waiver of visa requirements for nationals of the RMI and the ROC(Taiwan) on July 27 this year during president Heine’s state visit to Taiwan, foreign Ministers John Silk of the RMI and Jaushieh Joseph Wu of the ROC(Taiwan) formally unveiled the visa-waiver program in an dinner reception held in ICC on Nov. 20.
“Mutual visa waiver program for nationals of both of our countries is not just a token for the celebration of the 20th year of diplomatic relations between RMI and ROC(Taiwan). It is also a big step forward to realize president Tsai Ing-wen’s pledge to offer visa-free treatment for the RMI during her state visit last year. We believe this program will further promote trade and exchange of people between our two countries,” said ROC(Taiwan) Ambassador Jeffery S. C. Hsiao.
For the information of the RMI people, according to Article 2 of the said agreement, a national of the RMI that can enjoy visa-waiver travel to Taiwan shall mean any person who holds the nationality of the RMI and is confined to the following categories:
A person who acquires the citizenship of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands at birth before the effective date of the Constitution of the RMI, and has become and remains a citizen of the RMI; or
A person who acquires the citizenship of the RMI at birth, on or after the effective date of the Constitution of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
It is suggested that Marshallese nationals traveling to ROC(Taiwan) consult the AG office or the Embassy of ROC(Taiwan) before making such trip.
