In order to continue promoting Taiwan-Myanmar health care cooperation, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Myanmar has facilitated the signing of MOU between Myanmar’s Social Welfare Association, Lashio (SWAL) and Taiwan’s Shin Kong Wu Ho-su Memorial Hospital. The two parties held an online signing ceremony on June 24, respectively represented by Chairman U Maung Myint of SWAL and Dr. Hsu Rong-hui, Executive Director of the International Medical Myanmar Team of Shin Kong Hospital. Ambassador Charles C. Li of TECO and other representatives were present to witness the signing of the MOU.
The first cooperation project between the two parties will be the clinical training program in Taiwan for two SWAL-related phisicians to go to Taiwan for a three-month intensive program from September to December of this year, purposed to improve their clinical specialties, update current medical knowledge and technology, and visit particular facilities in Taiwan.
Ambassador Charles Li of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Myanmar pointed out that Taiwan’s New Southbound medical and health cooperation policy was to use its soft power advantages and extensive successful experience in medical services, public health system, medical materials and drug development to promote cooperation with neighboring countries.
He thanked Shin Kong Hospital for its long-term and active interaction with local medical institutions in Myanmar, including transferring a few cases of rare-disease patients to Shin Kong for medical treatment, and even during the global Covid-19 pandemic, Shin Kong kept in touch with Myanmar medical institutions and continued to get ready for its training programs.
He also mentioned that the Social Welfare Association, Lashio was an important NGO in Shan State, Myanmar. In addition to running a charity clinic, it also operates a hemodialysis center, providing valuable medical services to local patients, and actively cooperates with international NGOs.
He hoped that in the future, under the structure of the MOU, the two parties would continue to develop diversified cooperation projects, establish a substantial partnership, and create a win-win situation.
