Eslite held the grand opening ceremony of its first branch in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on December 17, which is also the first flagship outlet in Southeast Asia. It is positioned as a compound cultural venue of reading, cultural and creative design, fashion trends, art performances and world-class coffee.
Ms. Anne Hung, representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, was invited to attend the event. “Malaysia has long been a close partner with Taiwan in terms of trade and investment. Despite the rage of the pandemic in the past two years, bilateral trade between Taiwan and Malaysia registered nearly 28 billion US dollars in 2021, a growth of 26% over 2020. Taiwan was Malaysia’s fifth largest trading partner, and Malaysia was Taiwan’s seventh largest. Taiwan was also Malaysia’s eighth largest FDI, with accumulated investment reaching nearly 14 billion US dollars up to date.” She said.
“As far as talent cultivation, the number of Malaysian students studying in Taiwan reached more than 12,000 each year, while accumulated number of Malaysian alumni from Taiwan universities totaled around 80,000 until 2021. Prior to the pandemic, over half a million Malaysians visited Taiwan each year, versus 380,000 Taiwanese traveled to Malaysia. Taiwan is well-known not only for its high-tech industries but also for its soft power. As the leader of cultural and creative industry in Taiwan, Eslite has always been devoted to integrating diversified local elements and ingredients into its outlets, making it way beyond a bookstore, but an emblem of Taiwanese lifestyle instead. It was internationally recognized, which is expected to bring in a new business model and a new lifestyle into Malaysia.”
Located in The Starhill in Bukit Bintang, Eslite Kuala Lumpur has turned to Italo Calvino’s iconic novel, Invisible Cities, for design inspiration, which incorporates four themed spaces, namely the City of Arches, The Floating City, the City of Rippling Waves, and the City of Eternal Day. Eslite is a cultural venue that offers books, creative design, fashion trends, art exhibitions, coffee and catering, hand-made experience and other diversified contents.
