[Background Information]
The Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) airlifted relief supplies to Cebu in the Philippines
The central and southern regions of the Philippines were devastated by Super Typhoon Odette (Rai) as it made landfall on 16 December 2021. Immediately after the casualties and damage of the typhoon covered by news reports, President Tsai Ing-wen conveyed her condolences and sympathies to the families of the victims and instructed relevant government agencies to provide relief aid to the Philippines.
Sharing the same feelings with the people affected by Typhoon Rai, the people and government of Taiwan quickly carried out humanitarian operations.
Two shipments of relief goods with a total of 10 metric tons and worth USD 50,000, including bottled water, canned tuna, instant noodles, cookies, food rations, tents, water filters, were airlifted to the Philippines from Pingtung Air Force Base by two C-130 Hercules cargo planes and landed at Mactan-Cebu International Airport on the morning of 25 and 26 December 2021 respectively.
On behalf of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Representative Peiyung Hsu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines handed over the donation of the relief goods to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) for relief distribution to affected areas and people.
The entire process of the supplies was in compliance with health protocols and quarantine measures of Taiwan and the Philippines.
To contribute to the relief and rehabilitation efforts of the Philippine government, the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) donated USD 500,000 to the Republic of the Philippines on 22 December 2021. Taiwan Association Inc. Philippines and Love From Koten Foundation also donated 2.7 million and 2 million pesos, respectively, for disaster relief assistance.
The relief work jointly conducted by the Taiwan government and Taiwan NGOs embodies the spirit of "Taiwan can help, and Taiwan is helping!"
