The 2026 Huayu Enrichment Scholarship is now open for application. We welcome all eligible students who are interested in learning Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan to apply. The deadline for HES application is March 31st, 2026. Please see below to learn more about the application guidelines.

The Ministry of Education’s Huayu Enrichment Scholarships support international students pursuing Huayu (Mandarin Chinese) courses in Taiwan, both to enhance their language skills while fostering their understanding of Taiwanese culture and society, and to promote mutual understanding between Taiwan and the international community.
Recipients will receive a 28,000 New Taiwan Dollar (NTD) monthly stipend for each month of their scholarship award period.

Application Form and Supporting Documents:
A completed Application Form
A copy of the applicant's Passport or other documents that may verify nationality.
A copy of the applicant's highest degree and academic transcripts (all certificates must be in Portugues).
A photocopy of the applicant's application to a Mandarin Language Centre in Taiwan.
Two reference letters signed (*we also accept applicants to send the letters via emails directly to the Committee at prt@mofa.gov.tw
A signed Terms of Agreement Ministry of Education Huayu Enrichment Scholarship Program (HES) Form.
Language Proficiency Requirements 1. Mandarin Chinese Proficiency: TOCFL (Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language) Level 1 (A1) certificate; or
English Proficiency: IELTS score of 5.0 above; or
TOEFL iBT score of 35–45 or above, or pBT score of 450–477 above;
An official university/college/school transcript showing a minimum grade of 90 out of 100 for a program taught in English.

- The awarded duration of the HES is from the 1st of September, 2026 to the 31st August, 2027. If recipients fail to get to Taiwan for enrolment during the designated time, they will forfeit their right to retain their scholarships.
- Please note that our office can only accept scholarship applications from Portugal, Cabo Verde, Sao Tome & Principe and Guinea Bissau .
- Eligibility: above the age of 18, who possess a senior high school diploma or above, have shown excellent academic performance, and are of good moral character are eligible.
- Candidates with one of the following qualifications are ineligible to apply:
- Currently a registered student at any Mandarin Language Center or has been a degree-seeking student at any university or college in Taiwan.
- Has already received an HES or a Taiwan Scholarship in the past.
- Will be studying in Taiwan during the scholarship award period as part of an exchange student program or study-abroad program.
- During the study period in Taiwan, receiving financial benefits (including awards and subsidies) from the Taiwan government agencies, institutions, and/or schools in Taiwan.
- Starting from the Summer Term of the 115th (2026) Academic Year, applicants holding landing visas, electronic visas, or visa-exempt entry will not be eligible to receive the Mandarin Language Scholarship.

Date for Release of Selection Result: 20 May, 2026
Date for Submission of Approved Admission Letter: 30 June, 2026
Applications should apply to the Mandarin Language Centre of a Taiwan university and follow the university’s regulations. Once admitted, the recipients should upload/ send a copy of Admission Letter to online application system for confirmation. Recipients who do not submit their Letters before 30 June, 2026 will be disqualified from the scholarship selection process.
