Representative Francis Kuo-Hsin Liang, Deputy Representative Steven Tai and other officials from the Taipei Representative Office in Singapore attended the lunch reception held by the United Chinese Library on 4 August 2019 to mark its 109th anniversary as well as Singapore’s 54 years of independence. Close to 400 guests, including office bearers from the Taipei Business Association in Singapore, the Alumni of Taiwan
Universities and Colleges, and other prominent Chinese associations in Singapore were at the event.
During his address at the lunch reception, Representative Liang said that Singapore’s transformation into a garden city as well as a technologically advanced smart city following its independence in 1965 has won it many accolades worldwide. Taiwan and Singapore have a longstanding friendship and enjoy close relations in various key areas including economy, culture, education and tourism. In 2018, Taiwan was Singapore’s fifth largest trading partner. Additionally, Representative Liang affirmed the role of the United Chinese Library, which was founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in 1910. Over its more than 100-year history, it has kept pace with the changing times, while holding true to its founding principles. Undeniably, as a memorial center to honor Dr. Sun and his values, the United Chinese Library has established itself as an important Chinese cultural center in Singapore.
