WASHINGTON -- Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn, is to open a plant in the United States, U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday at a highly anticipated announcement alongside the company's chief, Terry Gou.
In a US$10 billion investment, Hon Hai will build a plant to make LCD screens in the north-central state of Wisconsin and initially create some 3,000 jobs. The number of jobs could eventually increase to 13,000, Trump said.
Thank you Foxconn, for investing $10 BILLION DOLLARS with the potential for up to 13K new jobs in Wisconsin! MadeInTheUSA??
"Thank you for your investment in the American worker," Trump told Gou at the White House. "They will not let you down. They never let us down, there is no one like the American worker."
Hai Hai has yet to say which community in Wisconsin will be home to the plant. The tech company is known for making iPhones in China.
White House officials called the development significant for bringing advanced manufacturing of electronics back to the United States after decades of outsourcing.
Trump, who has touted job creation and the revitalization of American manufacturing as a central part of his presidency, had personally met with Gou to discuss the deal, a senior White House official said.
Gou called the technology to be built at the Wisconsin plant the "wave of the future" and said it would return television manufacturing to the nation that invented the TV.
The state of Wisconsin would provide some US$3 billion in economic incentives to the company, Governor Scott Walker said.
