Swaziland is rated fourth in the world in terms of suicide statistics. According to www. worldlifeexpectancy.com, the country’s ratio is 25.3/100000, or 25.3 people per 100 000 are likely to meet their demise at their own hands. This is a significantly high number, taking into account that the country’s population is estimated at 1.2 million. The other four countries in the top five are: 1. Guyana: 32.5 out of 100 000. 2. Lithuania: The suicide rate is 31.2 out of every 100 000 people. 3. Kazakhstan: 31.1 out of every 100 000 people. 4. Russia: 23.4 people out of 100 000 commit suicide in the country.
The causes of suicide are many and varied, largely influenced by depression. Other causes include: 1. Personal history – psychological trauma may haunt the individual until he/she opts for a drastic choice of escape from life’s problems. 2. Mental health – schizophrenia and other mental health issues. 3. Lifestyle habits – drug and/or alcohol abuse. 4. Employment status – unemployment or poor job satisfaction may be contributing factors. 5. Relationships – not enough social support and social isolation. 6. Genetics-family history.
