President Tsai Ing-wen congratulated Academia Sinica on reaching a milestone in the development of Taiwan’s quantum technology industry with the country’s first 5-quantum-bit superconducting full-stack quantum computer.
The president made the remarks while reviewing the research institution’s quantum computing progress Jan. 29 in Taipei City. She said that the field has been a priority for the country since 2021, when cooperation between the National Science and Development Council, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and Academia Sinica began, while a five-year budget of NT$8 billion (around US$256 million) dedicated to enhancing Taiwan’s quantum computing technology was approved in 2022.
Tsai said that this technology has applications for daily life, using the reinforcement of informational and national security through quantum encryption as an example. The powerful computing capability of quantum technology will also have tremendous impacts on artificial intelligence, biomedicine and finance, she added.
The president said that preliminary results are promising, as evidenced by National Tsing Hua University’s May 2023 launch of a quantum network coding, the 5-qubit quantum chip created by Academia Sinica in October 2023 and now the first quantum computer.
Tsai voiced her appreciation of the Academia Sinica’s Institute of Physics hard work in this field as well as the strong emphasis that James Liao, president of the academy, has placed on pioneering science and research.
