……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
UMAP, founded in 1993, is one of the largest international academic organizations in the Asian and Pacific region. In 2011, Thailand passed UMAP international Secretariat (IS) office over to Taiwan, where UMAP IS affairs are handled by Fu Jen Catholic University. With the rapid developments of globalization, students and scholars are required to be competitive in global society, and studying abroad is the best way for Taiwanese students to cultivate their interests in interdisciplinary and international learning environments. Scholarly exchange is also the best way for educational practitioners and researchers to develop their abilities and knowledge in their fields of expertise.
The “UMAP Taiwan Exchange Student Program Scholarship” was established in 2012. Its purpose is to encourage educational and cultural exchange among UMAP members and territories. Funded by the Taiwan Ministry of Education, the scholarship grants each recipient NTD 20,000 (roughly USD660) per month to undertake exchange programs for one or two semesters. Applications are accepted twice a year based on the timeline of USCO (UMAP Student Connection Online). All applicants for the scholarship must be UMAP outbound exchange students in Taiwan or UMAP inbound exchange students from other countries/territories to Taiwan, who must be successfully accepted by the host institutions through the USCO online exchange student system before they can be considered.
The five recipients of the UMAP Taiwan Scholarships are Yun-Hsiang Lin and Ya Wen Ho from Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan, Cheng-Yu Lin from National Yunlin University of Science and Technology in Taiwan, Edgar Rojas Rivera from Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juarez in Mexico, and Wasukarn Obom from Mae Fah Luang University in Thailand.
Wasukarn Obom, from Mae Fah Luang University in Thailand expressed an immense gratitude to Ministry of Education in Taiwan and UMAP for awarding her the scholarship. She will study at the English Department in the National Cheng Chi University. She believes she can excel in her English and Chinese studies in Taiwan. When she goes back to Thailand, she hopes to work for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand.
UMAP IS congratulates recipients of the “2012 UMAP Taiwan Scholarship”. The second period of application for the “2012 UMAP Taiwan Scholarship” will start in September 2012. UMAP IS hopes in the future that more students can make their dreams come true as these five students are doing. Interested students may contact UMAP IS for further assistance and information.
