A new book on Taiwan’s soft power ‘Taiwan’s Impact on China: Why Soft Power Matters More than Economic or Political Inputs’ was published by Palgrave Macmillan in late April 2017.
Edited by Steve Tsang, director of SOAS China Institute, the book concerns the impact Taiwan has on mainland China. It examines how Taiwan has helped mainland China’s economic development but argues Taiwan’s greatest influence is through soft power. The book demonstrates how Taiwan exerts real influence on mainland China and makes significant marks in terms of popular culture, music, and literature, in addition to politics and economics.
The book’s publication comes prior to the annual roundtable of the Taiwan studies programme, ‘The Pattern of Taiwan’s Democratisation.’ Co-organised by the University of Nottingham’s Taiwan Studies Programme, and the University of Tübingen European Research Centre on Contemporary Taiwan, the roundtable will be held from 22-23 June 2017.
