From 1-10 August, a delegation from Taiwan’s Changhua County Government visited the UK to learn about its approach to developing renewable energy technologies, including offshore wind power and low-carbon cities.
Led by Mr Wei Ming-ku, Magistrate (chief executive) of Changhua County’s Government, the 39-person delegation visited sites across the UK, including London, Manchester, Barrow-in-Furness, Edinburgh and Grimsby.
In London, the delegation visited BedZED, the UK’s first large-scale, mixed use sustainable housing development, as well as the UK Green Investment Bank, a bank created by the UK government to invest in green projects, and the TRO, where they met with Taiwanese overseas students and young entrepreneurs. Representative Lin told the delegation that he hoped the TRO could be a facilitator for developing Taiwan-UK cooperation in offshore wind energy in the future. The delegation was later accompanied by Representative Lin to a meeting with Lord Faulkner of Worcester, the UK government’s Taiwan Trade Envoy, to discuss cooperation opportunities in offshore wind power.
In Manchester, the delegation met with David Houliston, Principal Policy Officer of Manchester City Council, to explore opportunities for cooperation in low carbon cities. Further visits were made to the Ormonde Wind Farm in Barrow-in-Furness, the Energy Technology Partnership, an alliance of Scottish Universities engaged in energy research based in Edinburgh, and DONG Energy’s operational hub in Grimsby, the UK's largest offshore wind operations and maintenance hub.
