On 5 February 2018, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) began issuing next-generation e-Passports to citizens of Taiwan. Citizens are now able to apply for these e-Passports at MOFA’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, its branch offices in Taichung, Kaohsiung, Hualian, Chiayi, and missions abroad. E-Passports issued prior to 5 February 2018 remain valid until their listed expiry date. The application fee, procedures and requirements for e-Passports remain unchanged.
In adherence to international protocol, specimens of the next-generation e-Passport have been sent to foreign governments to ensure citizens’ travel remains undisturbed. The e-Passport is one of many MOFA initiatives aimed at improving the visa privileges of overseas Taiwanese and enhancing the international status of the Taiwanese passport.
