The Taiwan Stock Exchange hosted a forum and Taiwan Securities Association and the ICMA signed a MOU in London

The Taiwan Stock Exchange(TWSE) hosted a forum and a promotion conference, namely “New Era for Investment in Taiwan Forum 2009” and “Taiwan Equity Markets for Foreign Issuers”, on the 8th of September at the Waldorf Hilton in London.

During the “New Era for Investment in Taiwan Forum 2009”, the chairman of the TWSE, Dr. Chi Schive, expressed how Taiwan equities will benefit from better cross-straits relations. He mentioned Taiwan’s economic outlook and benefits from warming cross-straits ties, the development of Taiwan Securities and derivatives markets and Taiwan as an alternative fund raising platform for overseas companies.

A panel discussion followed, featuring the head of Securities and Futures Bureau, the Taiwan Stock Exchange, the Taiwan Futures Exchange and the GreTai Securities Markets, and was moderated by Mr Robert Barnes, Managing Director of the UBS investment Banks. The panellists discussed Taiwan’s capital markets repositioning to capture growth, including Taiwan introducing more and more financial products for its investors to meet their investment needs, development and reform of Taiwan’s capital markets and the competitive advantage of Taiwan’s capital markets and also opened the floor to ask questions and received enthusiastic response.

The Commissioner of the Financial Supervisory Commission(FSC) in Taiwan, Dr. Tzong-Rong Tsai, addressed a keynote speech “Opportunities for international investment communities upon the opening of the Taiwan financial and securities industries”. Commissioner Tsai talked about the deregulation of the domestic securities market and the increased competitiveness of Taiwan’s financial industry. About 45 international institutional investors, especially those who focus on Asian markets, participated in this forum.

During the “Taiwan Equity Markets for Foreign Issuers” promotion conference, Deputy Director-General of the Securities and Futures Bureau of the FSC, Ms. Yung-Hsin Wang, whilst also highlighted the recent developments in the Taiwan Capital Markets. The senior vice president of the TWSE and the senior executive vice president of the GreTai Securities Markets, Mr. Shin-Chung Chen and Mr. Chu-Yuan Chu, explained the advantages of Taiwan’s capital market and listing in Taiwan by Foreign Issuers. About 70 people representing enterprises, securities firms, law firms, CPA firms, bankers, chambers of commerce and overseas compatriots in the U.K all attended.

TRO Representative Katharine Chang was invited to make a brief speech over dinner. She mentioned that Taiwan is an island which needs to open its markets in order to improve its economy. It was also mentioned that there are a lot of new strategies and measures being adopted in Taiwan to put the country more in line with the international community. With the improvement in the relationship between the cross-straits, this has helped to result in a practical and win-win solution. She believes that the signing of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement(ECFA)will also serve to benefit the development of Taiwan’s economy. Furthermore, it should be the best choice for foreign issuers who are also looking for a way into the China markets.

The Chairman of the Taiwan Securities Association (TSA), Dr. Min-Juh Hwang, and the president of the International Capital Market Association (ICMA), Mr. Mr. René Karsenti signed a MOU on the 7th of September. The Commissioner of the FSC, Dr. Tzong-Rong Tsai, was also invited to make a brief speech. Mr. Daniel Ho, director of the FSC London Office and about 50 participants from the ICMA, Taiwan securities related industries and managers of the Taiwanese banks’ London branches were also invited to attend this ceremony.
