Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Theatre Royal Haymarket Masterclass, welcomes present and future theatre professionals and practitioners to attend a masterclass and workshop presented by Wu Hsing-kuo, the Artistic Director of the Contemporary Legend Theatre, on Tuesday the 20th of August at 2pm. The event, which will take place on the Theatre Royal Haymarket stage, will focus on Wu’s efforts to adapt classical Western plays to the context of Peking opera.
With his training in both classic Peking opera and contemporary dance, Wu’s groundbreaking performances have garnered him worldwide acclaim and lent to comparisons in The Guardian and The Thames with Orson Welles and Lawrence Olivier. Wu’s accomplishments have been acknowledged by Taiwan’s National Literary and Art Award (2011) and the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres-Chevalier (2011). Following the success of his adaptation of King Lear at the 2011 Edinburgh International Festival, Wu has been invited again to present his rendition of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis on the opening night of this year’s EIF.
The masterclass and practical workshop, for which places are limited, will be delivered in Wu’s native Mandarin, and chaired and interpretated by Dr Li Ruru of the University of Leeds.
