Ting-Tong Chang (b. Taiwan, 1982) graduated from Goldsmiths College in 2011. He currently lives and works in London and has exhibited internationally, including the 6th Taipei Biennial (2008), the 2nd Taiwan Biennial 2010 (National Museum of Fine Art), European Performance Art Festival (Warsaw Centre for Contemporary Art, 2011) and III Moscow Biennial for Young Arts (National Museum of Modern Arts, 2012). In 2014, as the recipient of the Creative Initiative Award, Chang held dual solo exhibitions at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (ESW) and Matthew Gallery.
The project is held as part of Bristol Biennial, an international artist-led festival that celebrates exciting and engaging projects by talented emerging artists. This year, the festival takes 'Crossing the Line' as its theme, exploring artistic boundaries and encouraging collaboration across the city. Bristol Biennial 2014 is supported by Arts Council England. See www.bristolbiennial.co.uk for the full programme.
The project, Blind Chance, follows the death of a Chinese immigrant, Eric Wang (1980-2012), who migrated to London in 1992, and became a property salesman in the borough of Lambeth. In the late afternoon of the 23rd of March 2012, Wang was riding his bike nearby Bow roundabout, when a tourist bus collided with him. Wang was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Boarding the same tourist bus that took Wang’s life, the project will invite the audience to re-trace his last day. In doing so, the bus will head to the middle of nowhere and stop in several random spots, where one passenger, chosen arbitrarily, will be asked to leave the bus, starting then his/her own adventure.
Inspired by ideas surrounding death, the immortal soul, and Chinese notions of ghosts and reincarnation, the present project is an exploration into the relationship between spiritual displacement and modern capital. Consequently, Eric Wang interrogates how individuals are entangled in capital and how they are implicated in London’s booming property market.
