A Taiwanese whisky has been awarded the title of ‘worlds best single malt’, at the World Whiskies Awards. The whisky, named Kavalan Solist Binho Barrique won much praise from judges who branded it ‘surprisingly smooth’ and reminiscent of ‘bourbon infused milk chocolate’.
Having only released its first bottle in 2008, the award comes as another big achievement for the distillery, which was also named the ‘New Whisky of the Year’ by the Whisky Bible in 2012 and awarded a gold medal in the San Francisco World Spirits competition in the same year.
The name Kavalan means ‘flatland people’ and is named after the aboriginal ethnic group which originally inhabited the modern day Yilan County, which is also the home of the King Car distillery, where the whisky is produced.
The outcome will be well received by Taiwan’s whisky industry, boosting the island’s reputation as a formidable player in the spirits market.
