Don't miss the BFI’s tribute to the great Taiwanese director Edward Yang this autumn (23 September - 9 October) Edward Yang was a brilliant analyst of present-day city life and of Taiwan's fraught latter-day history, and a deeply humane observer of lives, loves and fears. We celebrate the great achievements of a modern master. Yang was born in Shanghai and raised in Taipei; his parents fled from China to Taiwan after the communist victory in the civil war in 1949, yet his cinematic career was a collaboration with a range of Asian artists including Japanese and Hong Kong actors and writers.
There are a range of talks and screenings including Shake and Bake: An Introduction to the Cinema of Edward Yang where we look at what makes Edward Yang, one of the founders of the 'Taiwan New Wave', unique as well as the chance to see Taipei Story where Yang raised questions about attitudes to late 20th century life through a failing relationship.
Other titles in the season are The Terrorisers , In Our Time, A Brighter Summer Day and A One and A Two...
