The Taiwan Fellowships & Scholarships (TAFS) programme is a Republic of China government initiative aimed at promoting research, establishing educational links and creating enduring relationships between Taiwan and the global community.
The awards available are split into three categories: language (Mandarin) scholarships, degree scholarships and research fellowships. Approximately 1,250 grants are provided annually for undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as researchers around the world to study or to conduct advanced research in Taiwan. Language(Mandarin)Scholarships
Ministry of Education (MOE) Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarship
Huayu Enrichment Scholarships enable recipients to undertake Mandarin courses at designated language centres in Taiwan.
Financial assistance: Monthly stipend of NT$ 25,000
Provisional application period: February 1st to March 31st
Scholarship duration: Two months (summer course), three months, six months, nine months or twelve months.
Degree Scholarships
Ministry of Education (MOE) Taiwan Scholarship
The MOE Taiwan Scholarship continues to encourage outstanding students to pursue academic degrees (undergraduate, master’s or doctoral degree programmes)in Taiwan and to deepen their understanding of Taiwan's academic environment, thereby enhancing exchanges and building friendships between Taiwan and their home nations.
Financial assistance:
- Monthly stipend of NT$ 15,000 for undergraduate programmes and NT$ 20,000 for postgraduate programmes
- Waiver of tuition and certain other academic fees
Provisional application period: February 1st to March 31st
Duration: Four years for undergraduate degree; two years for master’s degree; four years for doctoral degree. Maximum duration of programs under this scholarship: Five years.
Taiwan Academia Sinica Taiwan International Graduate Programme (TIPG)
The TIGP is aimed at international graduates wishing to undertake advanced PhD studies in fields related to science and technology at key national research universities in Taiwan.
Financial assistance: Monthly stipend of NT$ 32,000
Provisional application period: From announcement date until March 31st of the following year
Scholarship duration: Three years maximum.
Research Fellowships
Fellowships provide grants enabling high-level academics to conduct research in Taiwan.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Taiwan Fellowship
Available to foreign experts and scholars wishing to conduct advanced research on Taiwan, cross-strait relations, mainland China, Asia –Pacific region and Chinese studies at univerities or academic institutions in Taiwan.
Financial assistance:
- Monthly stipend of NT$ 60,000 (professors, associate professors, research fellows and associate research fellows); or NT$ 50,000 (assistant professors, assistant research fellows, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, doctoral students and other recommended candidates)
- Accident and medical insurance
- Economy-class return flight
Application period: May 1st to July 15th
Fellowship duration: Three to twelve months.
Ministry of Education (MOE) Short-Term Research Award
Available to international scholars wishing to undertake research related to humanities, social sciences, arts and culture in Taiwan.
Financial assistance:
- Monthly research allowance of NT$ 25,000 (PhD candidates) or NT$ 40,000 (post-doctoral fellows)
- Economy-class return flight
Provisional application period: Before the end of September
Fellowship duration: Two to six months.
Research Grant for Foreign Scholars in Chinese Studies
Foreign scholars are sponsored by the Centre for Chinese Studies (CCS) to conduct research in Taiwan in the field of Chinese studies and Taiwan studies.
Financial assistance:
- Monthly grant of NT$ 60,000 (professors), NT$ 50,000 (associate professors) or NT$ 40,000 (assistant professors and doctoral candidates)
- Economy-class return flight
Provisional application period: Before May 31st
Fellowship duration: Three to twelve months.
Other Awards
Taiwan Foundation for Democracy Fellowships
Available to scholars and advocates in the fields of democracy and human rights.
Financial assistance:
- Grant (determined following evaluation)

Fellowship duration: Up to twelve months.
Application period: vary depending on the fellowship programme.
Chiang Chingkuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange Grants
Available to foreign academic institutions and scholars with an interest in Chinese and Taiwanese society and culture.
