The National Communications Commission approved Dec. 21 a proposal by Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. to lower its broadband Internet subscription fees by roughly 20 percent.
Starting January 2012, internet connection fees will be lowered for over 2.1 million Chunghwa Telecom individual broadband users in Taiwan, according to the plan.
Subscribers to the company’s 2 megabits per second and 3Mbps plans will see price cuts of 27.2 percent and 24.5 percent, respectively, and will end up paying NT$518 (US$17) and NT$576 per month for their services, the NCC said.
By offering Internet connection at a lower price, Chunghwa Telecom is showing its support to a government initiative to strengthen Taiwan’s digital capacity, the telecom company said in a Dec. 14 statement.
NCC statistics showed that Chunghwa Telecom’s revenue generated by the ADSL Internet service tops NT$1.1 billion per month. The new plan is expected to cut revenues by NT$280 million per month.
Chunghwa Telecom is the major provider of telecommunication and Internet service in Taiwan, with over 10 million mobile phone subscribers and 4.37 million broadband Internet users.
In related news, Chunghwa Telecom announced it would reduce fees during the upcoming Lunar New Year season for international calls made to Canada, Hong Kong, mainland China, and the U.S.
