Winners of the 2013 National Invention and Creation Awards were named Sept. 5 by the Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) under the ROC Ministry of Economic Affairs, further underscoring government efforts to sharpen Taiwan’s global competitiveness.
“With 494 entries this year, up 30 percent from 2012, the increasingly popular event reflects the solid innovation capabilities of Taiwan’s government agencies, educational institutions, research bodies and private citizens,” TIPO Deputy Director-General Chu Hsin-hua said.
“The winning works reflect their creators’ ingenious technological abilities and possess great business potential, with most of the patented products ready for commercialization.”
To fast track this process, TIPO will coordinate with relevant government agencies and lay out relevant support measures. These include staging a special exhibition at this year’s Taipei International Invention Show and Technomart scheduled for Sept. 26-29 in the ROC capital.
According to TIPO, this year’s winners span a wide spectrum of fields such as biomedicine, carbon emission reductions, energy saving, health care and smart living.
Gold and silver awards in the invention category went to six and 28 entries, respectively, while for creation, it was six and 24.
Highlight creations include light-harvesting module as well as a foldable solar panel and sunshade device, both developed by Hsinchu County-based Industrial Technology Research Institute.
