Taiwan designers topped the honors board at Taipei International Design Award Oct. 30, spotlighting the nation’s burgeoning reputation as an Asia-Pacific hotbed of creativity and innovation.
“A total of 31 out of 57 winners spanning the industrial, public space and visual communication categories were from Taiwan,” an official from Taipei City Government’s Department of Economic Development said. “The competition attracted a record 4,001 entries from 45 countries, up 110 percent from last year.”
Taiwan designers Li Yin-kai and Wang Szu-hsin’s Easy Pin won top prize Taipei City mayor award, as well as the golden award in the industrial category. The duo’s submission, a combined clip and pushpin, allows easy access to attached documents while ensuring they remain free of holes.
Russian artist Anatolii Grashchenko’s Noise and Fury, a poster designed for a music festival at the Dom Cultural Center in the Russian capital Moscow, won the golden award in the visual communication category.
The golden award in the public space design category went to Floating Wall–Hengchun Footbridge, a creation that reconnects the historical walls of the township in Pingtung County, southern Taiwan, and functions as an outdoor sculpture and stage.
Designed by TNC Design Group, which is headed by Taiwan architect Malone Chang and interior designer Goran Wang, the work has been instrumental in repairing the walls damaged during an expansion project for the local junior high school.
According to Taipei City government, golden award winners each bagged cash prizes of NT$500,000 (US$17,011), along with a trophy and certificate of recognition.
Established in 2008, the award is part of local government efforts to encourage and recognize top-notch design in Taipei and abroad. The event is endorsed by the International Council of Graphic Design Associations and International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers, both headquartered in Montreal, Canada.
