The ROC government’s flagship infrastructure project, Taiwan Taoyuan Aerotropolis, is the largest since the 10 major constructions completed in the 1970s, with economic benefits projected to reach NT$2.3 trillion (US$77.4 billion), ROC Premier Jian Yi-huah said Dec. 10.
“The aerotropolis is the government’s most anticipated project in recent years,” Jiang said, adding that the investment is estimated at NT$500 billion, with more than 300,000 jobs created in northern Taiwan.
Jiang’s remarks came at the founding summit of the Taiwan Intelligent Aerotropolis Association, an industry alliance founded to help coordinate public and private investment in the project.
According to Jiang, the aerotropolis will not just make Taoyuan a gateway to Taiwan, but reshape the city as well as the greater Taipei area’s economic development. The industrial transformation and upgrade will in turn spur the rise of various smart industries, taking the nation’s development to a new level, the premier added.
TIAA President Lee Yen-sung, who is also chairman of Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd., said his firm will be responsible for installing 100Mbps broadband and 4G mobile communication networks with Internet data center cloud services at the aerotropolis to create a smart aviation city.
“The aerotropolis project is intimately connected with the Cabinet’s Free Economic Pilot Zones,” Jiang said. “Adjustment of regulations related to the FEPZ is in full swing, and once they have passed review, Taiwan’s economic liberalization and transformation will enter a crucial phase.”
Jiang said that the principles of liberalization, globalization and visionary planning at the core of the FEPZ are setting the stage for Taiwan’s next phase of economic development. The loosening of restrictions on logistical, talent and financial flows will attract internationally competitive industries to invest in Taiwan.
“If the FEPZ and Taoyuan Aerotropolis can bring about new industrial patterns and foreign investment models to effect transformation of related domestic industries, this will be their greatest contribution to Taiwan,” Jiang said.
