The 10th round of talks between Taipei City-based Straits Exchange Foundation and its Beijing-headquartered counterpart the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits delivered fruitful results, ROC premier Jiang Yi-huah said Feb. 28
The two pacts signed in Taipei on earthquake monitoring and meteorological exchanges will further improve the safety and well-being of the people on the two sides of the strait, as well as eradicate natural disaster-related property damage, Jiang said.
The premier made the remarks while meeting SEF Chairman Lin Join-sane and his team of negotiators in Taipei.
According to Jiang, the agreements are in keeping with a two-pronged national security mechanism on cross-strait talks established by the government this year. The first step involves ministrial-level review, with the second conducted by scholars and experts.
On future negotiations spanning such issues as aviation safety, taxation and trade in goods, the premier urged Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council and other relevant agencies to make all necessary preparations and keep the public informed of their progress in a timely manner. He said this will ensure greater support for the cross-strait talks going forward.
Jiang said the implementation of cross-strait agreements is just as important as signing them.
The second meeting held last week in mainland China to review the status of cross-strait pacts concluded to date yielded meaningful results, he said. It is important for the MAC, SEF and other involved parties to continue enhancing communication with their counterparts across the strait and deliberate on ways to further improve implementation of the agreements, he added.
This process is important if cross-strait relations are to continue going from strength to strength, he said, adding that all relevant agencies must work to institutionalize negotiations across the strait and lay a stronger foundation for peace and stability between Taiwan and mainland China.
