Taiwan illustrators Hung I-ching and Tang Mu-niu have been selected to showcase their work at the Illustrators Exhibition of the annual Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy running March 24-27, the ROC Ministry of Culture said.
Of the 3,190 entrants from 78 countries, 75 artists were chosen to exhibit, the MOC said March 18.
Five plates from up-and-coming inker Hung’s first picture-only book “Le Visiteur,” published by France-based publisher Hongfei Cultures, will feature in the show. This is the first time Hung, 32, who decided at 17 to become an illustrator, has been selected for the Bologna fair.
Tang Mu-niu, another debutant at the fair, uses geometric forms to represent people and animals in his work “The Worst Day.” Foreign rights for simplified character and Korean-language editions of the book have already been sold.
The Taiwan pavilion at this year’s fair, themed The Sweet Life, will be divided into seven major sections with 402 items from 38 publishers on display, including illustrations, cartoons, educational material and children’s e-books.
A special Taiwan recommends section, besides featuring the works of Hung and Tang, will show the work of other noted Taiwan artists including wild bird illustrator Liu Bor-leh.
This year’s book fair will introduce the Week of Children’s Books and Cultural Activities, which features 25,000 volumes highlighting works by 50 selected international authors, including the Chinese-language book “Wabi and Sabi” illustrated by Huang Yu-hsuan and written by Arlene Hsing.
