In 2010, Taiwanese baker Wu Pao-chun claimed the Master Baker title from the 2010 Les Masters de la Boulangerie (Bakery Masters) competition in France. Wu came from humble origins as the son of a manual laborer at a pineapple plantation. He would later take on an apprenticeship at a bakery to help his mother provide for the cost of maintaining the household, but from this auspicious beginning Wu would rise to the ranks of master. When he presented his rose-lychee bread to the panel of judges years later, he not only raised a trophy in honor of his mother but also brought renown to his home country – Taiwan.
Director Lin Ching-sheng brings the true story of Wu Pao-chun to life in 27°C – Loaf Rock. Lin weaves a tale of love, loss, and triumph while proving that Taiwan’s legendary culinary scene is more than just dumplings and beef noodle soup. The film also demonstrates how Taiwan’s traditional food culture can be blended with originally Western staples to create an award-winning, innovative bread fusion. Come join us and experience how Taiwanese culinary talents crossed cultural borders to prove that food speaks a universal language.
