According the United States Department of Commerce, Taiwan-U.S. trade totaled $4.7 billion in December 2003, up 14.7 percent compared with the same month in 2002. During December 2003, Taiwan imports from the United States rose 38.2 percent to $1.96 billion, while Taiwan exports to the U.S. rose 2.6 percent to $2.81 billion. Taiwan's trade surplus with the United States fell 35.7 percent in December to $849 million.
In December, Taiwan was the United States' eight largest trading partner (behind Canada, Mexico, the PRC, Japan, Germany, Great Britain, and South Korea); it's eighth largest export market (behind Canada, Mexico, Japan, the PRC, Great Britain, Germany, and South Korea), and its ninth largest source of imports (behind Canada, the PRC, Mexico, Japan, Germany, Great Britain, South Korea, and France).
For all of 2003, Taiwan-U.S. trade totaled $49.08 billion, down 2.9 percent compared to 2002. Last year, U.S. exports to Taiwan fell 4.9 percent to $17.48 billion, while Taiwan exports to the U.S. fell 1.7 percent to $31.6 billion.
