The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office’s (TECRO) Cultural Division will hold a workshop on the new AP-Chinese Language and Culture Program on November 5, 2005 at the TECRO Cultural Center in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
The workshop aims to assist aspiring Mandarin Chinese teachers prepare for the newly established AP-Chinese Course and Test, covering subjects from test preparation techniques to the general educational philosophies behind it. The workshop will also provide detailed information related to the “AP-Chinese” course/test, and explore what support currently K-12 teachers may need toward the new program. Finally, the workshop will offer information to assist those who are interested in becoming a certified Chinese language teacher.
Plans for the AP-Chinese Program was started after 2,400 American schools expressed interest in offering Mandarin Chinese to to students. Soon afterward, the College Board announced that standardized “Advanced Placement Chinese” (AP-Chinese) courses will be offered in high schools around the United States next year (2006), with the test following in 2007.
Taiwan’s chief representative, Dr. David Tawei Lee will deliver the opening remarks at the workshop on behalf of TECRO, followed by remarks by four professional scholars specializing in areas related to the “AP-Chinese” program. The speakers are:
Prof. Ching-Tse Lee of New York City University (also an AP-Chinese Task Force Member, College Board) will discuss “The Contents and Influence of the AP-Chinese Program.”
Prof. Miao-Fen Tseng of the University of Virginia (also an AP-Chinese Task Force Member, College Board) will speak about “How to Prepare for the AP-Chinese Course and Test.”
Dr. Shuhan C. Wang of the Delaware Dept. of Education will talk about “Teacher Preparation, Certification, and Professional Development for Chinese Language Teachers.”
Dr. Yu-Lan Lin of the Boston Public School System (also an AP Chinese Task Force Member, College Board) will describe “The Instructional Approaches of the AP-Chinese Program.”
Following the speakers’ presentations, there will be a general discussion forum between the workshop’s attendees and lecturers to further discuss details of the AP-Chinese Program.
