To introduce more literary works from Taiwan to English-speaking readers, Cambria Press is publishing a translated anthology of works by Taiwanese women writers in February, 2018. The anthology, featuring 11 short stories by eleven Taiwanese women writers and is a joint project by Cambria Press and The Taipei Chinese Center, PEN International in cooperation with the Taiwan Academy at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. and the Ministry of Culture, Republic of China (Taiwan).
The featured writers and their works in the newly released "Contemporary Taiwanese Women Writers: An Anthology” are: Li Ang “The Devil in a Chastity Belt,” Ping Lu “Wedding Date,” Chu T’ien-wen “The Story of Hsiao-Pi,” Tsai Su-fen “Taipei Train Station,” Lin Tai-man “The Party Girl,” Chung Wenyin “The Travels and Lover of a Junior High Girl,” Marula Liu “Baby, My Dear,” Su Wei-chen “No Time to Grow Up,” Yuan Chiung-chiung “A Place of One’s Own,” Liao Hui-ying “Seed of the Rape Plant” and Chen Jo-hsi “The Fish.”
In the anthology’s introduction, Dr. Jonathan Stalling, editor of Chinese Literature Today at the University of Oklahoma, notes that Taiwan literature “like its complex writing systems, exists in the present as a rich palimpsest of the cultural contact points, overlapping languages, peoples, and histories that have paved the way for one of the most vibrant literary scenes in the Sinosphere and the world beyond.”
