Congressman David Wu (D-OR) introduced House Resolution 1352 on May 12, 2010. This resolution supports the goals and ideals of Taiwanese American Heritage Week and recognizes the close relationship between the United States and Taiwan. Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. (TECRO) wishes to express its appreciation to Congressman Wu for his friendship and support.
This House resolution states that in 1992, the Congress passed Public Law 102-450, designating May of each year as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month. Since 1999, the second week of May, beginning on Mother’s Day has been recognized as Taiwanese American Heritage Week. The resolution also recognizes that Taiwanese Americans are a vital and vibrant part of United States society and have made long-lasting contributions in fields as arts, science, technology, business, public service and athletics. It further names some of the most famous Taiwanese Americans, such as Dr. Yuan Tseh Lee, 1986 Nobel Laureate in chemistry; Dr. Min Kao, the co-founder, Chairman and CEO of Garmin Ltd.; Ms. Vienna Teng, popular musician and songwriter; and Mr. Jason Wu, acclaimed fashion designer who designed First Lady Michelle Obama’s inaugural gown. Furthermore, the resolution adds that for more than sixty years, the United States and Taiwan have fostered a close relationship that has been of mutual political, economic, cultural and strategic benefits. Taiwan is one of the United States’ strongest allies and is dedicated to principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. The resolution supports the goals and ideals of Taiwanese American Heritage Week, recognizes the significant contributions of Taiwanese Americans and the important role they play in strengthening the fabric of the US society. It also states that the Congress is committed to enhancing peace, stability and prosperity in Taiwan and across the Taiwan Strait.
Congressman David Wu was born in Taiwan and is the first and the only Member of Congress with Taiwanese descent. He is also one of the most distinguished role-models of outstanding Taiwanese Americans. TECRO wishes to express its appreciation to Congressman Wu for his support and friendship.
