The American Film Institution is thrilled to present “Taiwanese Cinema Rediscovered” a series of classic and contemporary Taiwanese films from Nov. 14-30. Admission to the films in the series will be priced at $13 for general admission and $11 for AFI members.
“Taiwan Cinema Rediscovered” aims to explore the multitude of contributions that Taiwanese voices have made to the global art of film through the exhibition of works from both long-established auteurs and rising voices in the field. In its third iteration and return to in-person presentations, this series returns to the interplay of contemporary and historical storytelling so prevalent in Taiwanese cinema, exploring both the way in which a previous generation’s stories haunt those in the present (“Dragon Inn” and “Detention”) and how a hyper-contemporary moment in time can be eternalized via film (“The Falls”). Additionally, the series will be featuring a small sidebar focused on the films of Edward Yang, an artist whose body of work uniquely embodies the interplay of historical and contemporary storytelling that we seek to highlight with this year’s series.
As part of the film series, AFI Silver plans to screen the following films:
- “Detention” (返校), directed by John Hsu, 2019
- “A Sun” (陽光普照), directed by Chung Mong-Hong, 2019
- “The Falls” (瀑布), directed by Chung Mong-Hong, 2021
- “Dragon Inn” (龍門客棧), directed by King Hu, 1967
- “Goodbye, Dragon Inn” (不散), directed by Tsai Ming-liang, 2003
- “A Brighter Summer Day” (牯嶺街少年殺人事件), directed by Edward Yang, 1991
- “Yi Yi” (一一), directed by Edward Yang, 2000
- “Taipei Story” (青梅竹馬), directed by Edward Yang, 1985
The American Film Institute (AFI) was founded in 1967 as a non-profit arts organization to train filmmakers and preserve America’s rich film heritage for future generations, emerging from the idea that great storytelling matters and that movies have the power to unite, educate and inspire the nation. For over 50 years, AFI’s mission has been to preserve the heritage of motion pictures, honor the artists and their work and educate the next generation of storytellers. The AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center is AFI’s flagship theater, one of the premier film exhibition spaces in the United States and the leading specialty cinema in the Mid-Atlantic region, building an appreciation of the art and artists through exploring and celebrating new and classic films from around the globe. Anchored by the stunningly restored 1938 Silver Theatre, the three-screen AFI Silver is a state-of-the-art film and digital media exhibition venue that serves as a national model for preserving and honoring our shared film and film-going heritage.
This series is made possible by the support of the Ministry of Culture, Republic of China (Taiwan), and the Taiwan Academy of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States.
