At the invitation of the East Asian Program Director, Dr. Brian Woodall, and Emeritus Professor John Garver of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, Director General Vincent Liu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta gave a speech at Georgia Tech on October 26. Mr. Jay Taylor, Independent Scholar of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University, introduced DG Liu.
The Director General's speech was titled “Steadfast Diplomacy of Taiwan and My Visions of Taiwan's Relations with the SE United States.” It touched on several key points: the historic background of Taiwan's relations with Mainland China, Taiwan's international status and democracy development, President Tsai Ing-wen's Steadfast Diplomacy, Taiwan's trade relations with the US and the State of Georgia, and his visions on promoting Taiwan's relations with the US Southeast.
Dr. Woodall noted that DG Liu's speech was the first in a series of the East Asian Program's “East Asia Colloquium.” After his presentation, DG Liu and Dr. Woodall discussed ways to promote academic exchanges of scholars, students, and research initiatives, between Georgia Tech and institutes of higher learning in Taiwan.
