The 123rd Boston Marathon was held in Boston on April 15, 2019. As is tradition, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston (TECO-Boston), the Brookline Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce, and families of the Taiwanese runners, jointly set up a cheering station before the finish line to root for Taiwan’s runners, and gave them R. O. C. national flags. Director-General and Mrs. Douglas Y.T. Hsu of TECO-Boston were also present to cheer on the runners and took great pride of their achievement.
More than 180 Taiwanese runners participated in this year’s Boston Marathon. Of the Taiwanese runners, the oldest was 73-year-old Mr. Hu Teng-tsun, who has participated in the Boston Marathon for four consecutive years.
Director-General Hsu said he was excited and touched to see so many Taiwanese runners draped in the national flag before the finish line to raise Taiwan’s international visibility. He added that he wanted to thank the runners on behalf of the government.
Director-General Hsu was invited to attend a dinner hosted by the Brookline Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce and welcomed 202 runners and their family members on April 13, 2019. Mr. Hsu particularly thanked the Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the lobster dinner for the runners from Taiwan for six consecutive years.
