Ang Lee film Festival
TECO-Boston, in cooperation with the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations (EALC), Harvard University, and the Harvard Film Archive hosted a reception in honor of the Academy Award winning film director Ang Lee from Taiwan at the Harvard Faculty Club in Cambridge, MA on October 25.
The reception drew an exceptional crowd that included members of the mainstream film industry and academicians, including Oscar-winning screenwriter and producer James Schamus (Columbia University), Harvard Vice Provost Peter Bol, Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies Director Mark Elliott, Professors Tom Conley and Benny Shafer, Boston Globe Movies Editor Janice Page, Vanity Film Critic Daniel Kimmel, and other distinguished guests. The reception was one of many activities surrounding the “Ang Lee and the Art of Transnational Cinema: A Symposium,” which kicked off on October 25, 2013. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston, Harvard University and the Taipei Cultural Center in New York co-organized the symposium and events.
Director-General Anne Hung welcomed Ang Lee and guests, expressing her appreciation to Dr. David Der-Wei Wang of EALC and Mr. Haden Guest, Director of the Harvard Film Archive, for their many efforts in organizing the event. She praised Ang Lee for his accomplishments, contribution to film, and for showcasing Taiwan’s film industry. Ang Lee has had a string of successful films as Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Life of Pi (2012) which dazzled audiences worldwide. Life of Pi, in fact, won four Oscars at the 85th Academy Awards for Best Director, Cinematography, Visual Effects and Original Score.
The reception was a wonderful opportunity to meet Ang Lee in person who was generous with his time as he spoke with many of those who attended. It was definitely a night to remember and a source of pride for all those from Taiwan.
