At the invitation of Governor Felix Camacho of Guam, Executive Vice President Walter Yeh of Taiwan External Trade Development Council led a 36-member Taiwan Construction Mission to Guam from November 22 to 24. The purpose of the visit was to explore the business opportunities of Taiwan businessmen’s participation in the upcoming Guam Military Buildup, the total cost of which was estimated between 10.3 billion to 15 billion USD. During their 3-day visit, the delegation was briefed by organizations including the Guam Economic Development Authority, the Contractors Licensing Board, the Professional Engineers, Architects, and Land Surveyors Board, the Guam Contractors Association, the Guam Strategic Development EB5 Regional Center, the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, the Joint Guam Project Program and the Port Authority of Guam.
The business expo press conference of November 23, arranged by the Guam Economic Development Authority, has attracted media participation including KUAM, PNC, Pacific Daily News, Mariana Variety and Mariana Business Journal. Director General Vince Tsai of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Guam along with Vice President Walter Yeh answered questions from the reporters. The ‘one on one’ session business expo took place right after the press conference. As a result, a total of 97 local companies attended the expo. In fact, two members of the delegation have confirmed their orders from local companies the very next day after the expo. It is expected that Taiwan companies will have the opportunities to participate in the Guam Military Buildup in the next 5 years.
To show the significance of the delegation, Governor Felix Camacho along with First Lady Joann Camacho hosted a dinner at Government House. Also, Director General Vince Tsai, Chinese Chamber of Commerce hosted dinner for the delegation respectively.
